A Victory for All: Global Coalition Succeeds in Renewing UN Mandate on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
In a significant victory for human rights, the United Nations Human Rights Council has voted to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (IESOGI). The renewal is the direct result of a powerful global campaign where organizations, including allies of the Feminist Diplomacy Lab, showed up and spoke out to preserve this crucial role.
First established in 2016, the IESOGI mandate is the only UN mechanism specifically dedicated to investigating and reporting on violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans (LGBT), and gender-diverse persons worldwide. Its continuation ensures that a vital voice fighting with and for these communities remains active at the highest international level.
The renewal was secured through a resolution adopted by the Human Rights Council, demonstrating a reaffirmation of the international community's commitment to upholding the rights of all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The success of the #RenewIESOGI campaign, which brought together over 1,200 organizations from more than 150 countries including the Feminist Diplomacy Lab, highlights the power of collective action and global solidarity.
This mandate is instrumental in holding states accountable to their human rights obligations. The Independent Expert assesses the implementation of international law, investigates human rights violations, and provides essential support to governments and civil society to address the root causes of discrimination.
While this renewal is a moment for celebration, the work is far from over. The Feminist Diplomacy Lab and its partners recognize that persistent advocacy is essential. The renewal of the IESOGI mandate provides a critical tool to continue the fight for a world free from violence and discrimination, ensuring that the rights and dignity of every person are respected. The struggle continues, fortified by this collective success.
